Andrei Khadanovich is a Belarusian poet, translator, and literary figure. He stood at the origins of the contemporary Belarusian poetry scene, translating Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Polish poets into Belarusian.

"On the Bank of the Volya" is a collection whose title plays on the Belarusian word "volya" (freedom) and the river Volya/Vilya. It is a search for kinship with the country and the language at a moment when both are under pressure. Khadanovich writes with lightness and irony, but behind the wordplay lies a serious conversation.
